The Illusion of Beauty
Beauty and the problems that come with it.
in the eye of the beholder ...
Many women fail to see the beauty in themselves. They get hung up on
negative past experiences and find it hard to believe they could be attractive.
While society continues to endorse the merits of the “Super Model” woman
there will always be others who feel less attractive.
But consider what would happen if the public perception changed and those
considered less attractive today became more desirable tomorrow. Would
not another group of woman suddenly become alienated by societal pressures
and have to fight to establish their credence as worthy individuals.
So the beauty issue is a lose-lose situation. Like money, you can never
have enough of it, and if you suddenly acquire it, realize the goal posts
have shifted and you need even more to be fully satisfied.
And women, as much as men, tend to mock women for being overweight, unattractive
or having unusual characteristics. Magazines and newspapers are full of
articles by women picking away at other women's looks.
Women who are obsessed with being thin are not generally driven to it
by men, but by their own vanity. Rene Zwelleger, the actress who starred
in the Bridget Jones movies, admits that men found her more attractive
when she put on weight for the movies, but she's slimmed down again because
it's how she prefers herself. Women are often their own worst enemies.
and so ...
What can be done. By changing the opinion of the masses we will surely
alienate one demographic while elevating another. Women are quick to adapt
to change - and some will quickly learn to think of themselves as less
attractive in the new order.
The solution is a difficult one! We should not blame the 'unattractive'
victim but rather the advertising industry which makes women feel inadequate
if they are not anorectic super models!
Nobody forces women to buy magazines full of pictures of impossibly perfect
models, they buy them because it's what they want to read. And nobody
forces them to spend money on expensive clothes and beauty products ...
